What insurance would the genie from Aladdin need for his lamp?

TL;DR
Well, we think Genie would want to insure his lamp the same way a homeowner would insure a home. Then again, you have to account for magic.

With the recent release of the new Aladdin movie, we got to wondering – when the genie was living in his lamp, what kind of insurance would he need? Sure he’s a magical being with phenomenal powers, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t do the practical thing and get home insurance. We think that Genie would insure his lamp rather like a home because, well, it’s his home. Kind of.

What kind of insurance would Genie from Aladdin need?

Some of the coverages that a typical home insurance policy includes are:

  • Dwelling
  • Personal property
  • Other structures
  • Additional living expenses
  • Liability

Dwelling: This part of the insurance policy can help protect the structure of the home – in this case, lamp – against losses like fire. So, if the lamp got swept away in a fire, Genie would be able to rebuild it. (We hope that there’s no exclusion for power-hungry villains with talking parrots exploding the lamp or something. Jafar is bad news.)

Personal property: This coverage protects the contents of a home. We haven’t seen the inside of the genie’s lamp, but we’re betting that he has a bunch of cool furniture, clothes, and electronics that he’d want to replace. (We also recommend that Genie take a home inventory.)

Other structures: This one might not apply to the genie since he only has the lamp, but for typical homes this can cover detached structures on the homeowner’s property – for example, a garden shed. (Who knows? Maybe the Genie’s into gardening.)

Additional living expenses: ALE coverage can help Genie cover extra living expenses if he has to move out of his lamp due to a covered loss. It can help cover living costs in excess of what he would be spending if he were still able to live in his lamp.

Liability: Liability coverage can help protect Genie if someone sues him for bodily injury or property damage. Let’s say that Genie invites Aladdin and some friends over for a barbeque, but one of them trips and falls…and then decides to sue. (Jerk.) Liability can help Genie cover his legal expenses – and the injured person’s medical bills.

Now…will Genie be able to find an insurance carrier willing to write a magical lamp as a home? Not sure. But we wish him luck.
