Does car insurance cover zombies?

We’re not quite sure whether to be concerned or proud that you’re worried about your car insurance in a ZOMBIE. OUTBREAK. Priorities, people. But we’re here to answer the question about zombies anyway!

Does car insurance cover hitting zombies?

We’ve actually done some very scientific research into this topic. (And by “scientific research,” we mean, we asked Reddit and our insurance experts. There were some very odd looks from the latter.)

Apparently, it may depend on how your insurance classifies a zombie. If your carrier classifies the zombie as a living, “breathing” human that you hit, then your collision coverage may cover the damages – since, you know, that part of your insurance is made to help you if your car collides with something.

If your carrier classifies a zombie as an animal, though, you would need comprehensive coverage for your car insurance, which is built to help you handle:

• Fires
• Theft
• Vandals and hooligans
• Natural disasters
• Falling objects
• Or hitting an animal

As Reddit user, jasrpc, pointed out, though, this wouldn’t even begin to cover a Walking Dead situation (SPOILER) where you ran over a zombie that someone still considered family. If that family decided to sue you for mowing down their undead relative, your auto liability coverage may have to handle that.

Wait – then there’s the hazmat cleanup of a toxic, zombie-ridden corpse. Where does that fit in?

Anyways, if you’ve only been scooting by on your state’s minimum car insurance requirement, you’d probably only be covered for paying the family and your lawyer, though. States typically only require you to have enough liability and physical damage coverage to take care of the other people involved in a crash, not you.

The good news is, though, that car loan companies usually require you to get collision/comp coverage even if your state doesn’t. So, put down the machete and hug it out with them if they’ve survived as well.
