So, the winter holiday season is here! Which is exciting…and also a bit nerve-wracking! The holidays, though packed with fun and cheer and all that, are also full of hazards. In short – you gotta get ready for the holidays and take care not to burn the house down. (Literally and figuratively.) Here are a few tips to help you avert disaster.
1. Strategically decorate the tree. If you have a tree, make sure to put the ornaments that can break up at the top, where kids and pets can’t smash them accidentally.
2. Water your tree. Fun fact – trees can catch fire without much ado if the needles get too dry. Avoid a home insurance claim.
3. Be mindful of small batteries and such. Things like cards, remotes, and so on can have small batteries, which for some reason look completely delicious to small children.
4. Cut the lights if you’re going to sleep or if you’re leaving the house. Don’t leave your holiday lights on.
5. Check holiday lights. You’ve also got to keep an eye on your holiday lights to make sure nothing is frayed or damaged.
Get a home insurance quote6. Make sure the smoke detectors have batteries. Your smoke detectors aren’t going to be any help if the batteries are dead. There ought to be a smoke alarm on each level of the home and around the sleeping spaces.
7. Take care with the baking/cooking. Don’t forget to chase the kids and pets out of the kitchen when you’re cooking so no one gets hurt. Keep them away from the hot things that could burn them.
8. Be wary of candles. Don’t leave lit candles unattended, and make sure they’re at least a foot away from things that could catch fire. Also – keep the matches and/or lighter away from children.
9. Be careful if you’re driving. If you’re going to hit the road, be sure to be careful. No distracted driving, no speeding, no getting preoccupied.
10. Be considerate when choosing gifts. If you’re getting a gift for a child, make sure it’s age-appropriate for the child in question. (And don’t forget their younger sibling, who might want to play with the toy too!)
