Insurance TL;DR

Am I covered if I hit someone’s car in a parking lot?

Ooops. There’s a crunch. And a thunk. And that’s just great – you’ve managed to hit someone’s car in the parking lot. All you wanted to do was get some lunch, and now this. So, the question now is what do you do? There’s, you know, a smoosh in the other driver’s car. Wait, and second question – does car insurance cover that?

Well, first of all, don’t take off. Yes, we get it – the temptation is huge. No one would see you and you could be long gone. But that’s not the best idea. Hit and run – BAD PLAN. Just bad plan.

If you can’t find the driver, you can leave a note with your name and contact information. Make sure that you put the note somewhere that’s easy to find so that the driver can spot it easily when they return to the parking lot. You’ll need to talk to them and exchange insurance information and stuff.

Your property damage liability insurance may help cover the costs of repairing the other driver’s car, so they’ll be able to get the smoosh out of the bumper. (Property damage liability is the coverage that helps repair property that you might have smashed with your car on accident. It’s required by most states, so you probably need to have it.)

Anyways, hopefully when you talk to the driver they’re understanding and will respect that you did the right thing. You could have taken off. Try to keep your cool and keep things cordial. This sort of thing happens all the time – you are not the first person to have hit a parked car, and you will not be the last.
