6 winter driving safety tips

TL;DR
Take it easy. There's ice and stuff out there.

Winter is here, and that means that we’re in for some pretty gnarly driving conditions. Snow and cars don’t mix very well. If you’re planning on hitting the road this winter, don’t forget these quick tips for winter driving.

Winter driving safety tips

1. Make sure your car is ready.

You’ve got to make sure your vehicle is all set for winter. Cars don’t really like cold weather, but they can’t put on a heavy winter coat. You’ve got to keep an eye on the battery, coolant level, windshield wiper blades, and your tires. (Of course, you’ve got to keep up with car maintenance all year, but winter requires extra attention.)

Oh, and you’ve got to clear the car of snow before you set out. Snow can make it hard to see the road.

2. Take it slow.

You’ve got to slow down and take it easy. When it’s icky and snowy, it’s harder to get the car to stop and to get the car to do what you want. Anyways, don’t rush. Get to know your car and how it handles the snow.

3. Check the weather.

Get into the habit of checking the weather so you know what you’re up against. If you can plan your trips around the weather so you can avoid the nasty grossness, do so. Just stay off the roads if you need to.

4. Wear your seatbelt.

An object in motion stays in motion. And if you were to hit something, the car stops. You don’t. Wear your seatbelt to keep yourself safe so you’ll stop when the car stops.

5. Don’t drive distracted.

You need all your focus on the road if you’re driving in winter. No phones, no eating, no nonsense!

6. Pack an emergency kit.

Another thing that you might want to do is to pack an “Oh Crap” kit for just in case things go wrong. Include things like flashlights, blankets, jumper cables, and emergency lights – along with anything else that you deem would be helpful in an emergency.
